You won’t believe how stunning a master bedroom can look with a mix of purple, white, and gold.

I somewhat accidentally chose this color scheme the last time I re-decorated my primary bedroom, and it is still one of my favorite makeovers.

My inspiration was a beautiful purple floral duvet that led to painting the walls and ceiling a rich dark purple and adding a crisp white accent wall behind the bed.

To create a cozy vibe, I added a faux fireplace and a green velvet settee in a snug seating area.

Black trim adds a striking contrast, and gold accessories, including a sputnik chandelier with a gold medallion, give the space a touch of elegance.

This dark purple, white and gold bedroom makeover has transformed my sleeping space into a luxurious retreat, and I can’t wait to share every detail with you!

Here are all my ideas for decorating a room with dark purple bedroom walls

1 | Find an inspirational duvet

The easiest way to pick colors for a bedroom is to find a duvet (or bedspread) you love.

And then pick colors out of it to use in the rest of the room.

Which is exactly what I did with this purple floral duvet.

2 | Paint the bedroom walls and ceiling dark purple

My original idea was to use the background of the duvet for the paint color and do a very dramatic bedroom with black walls.

I was definitely not planning to go with purple paint. It’s one of those colors that I wanted in my bedroom when I was a kid. But I had never even thought of considering since then.

However, when I took out my Benjamin Moore paint deck and held up the colors beside my duvet, the “Shadow” purple paint chip was calling my name.

So I went for it.

And I’m so glad I did! I absolutely love my dark purple bedroom walls.

I used the same color in a matte finish on both the walls and the ceiling, which gave the room a soft, velvety look.

And created a very cozy feeling, almost like being wrapped up in a warm blanket.

3 | Create drama with black

I believe that all rooms should have some black in them. It adds drama and helps to ground the space.

Since the trim in my master bathroom is black, I decided to do the same in the bedroom to keep the two spaces looking cohesive.

So, I painted all of the moldings and doors in Benjamin Moore ‘Onyx’ in a semi-gloss finish.

And I love the textural contrast between the matte wall finish and the glossy black trim.

4 | Add a white accent wall

To add contrast and keep the room from feeling too dark, I used a fair amount of white.

Including on the accent wall behind the bed.

It consists of a large DIY panel that covers most of the wall with a white patterned wallpaper installed inside of it.

This not only helps to brighten up the room but also ensures that the bed wall is a focal point.

Using the same color on the fireplace and the curtains helps to tie the whole room together.

5 | Get a dramatic headboard

Of course, you can’t have a beautiful bedroom without a dramatic headboard.

I already owned a white leather one with a dark wood outline that looked like it fit right in with the wallpaper. So that’s what I went with originally.

I have recently updated this with a royal blue one that makes more of a statement against the white.

And picks up some of the other colors in the duvet.

It’s amazing how different the room looks with this one change!

6 | Reflect light with mirrors

I think every bedroom should have at least one full-length mirror.

Just in case you need to try on a new outfit. Or need to make sure what you’re wearing looks okay before you head out.

They are also another way to reflect light into the room when you’re using a dark paint color.

I originally hung 2 tall mirrors on either side of the bed to balance out the tall headboard.

And went with mirrored bedside tables for some extra shine.

When I replaced the headboard, these mirrors didn’t fit with the new design.

So I added an old rotating IKEA wardrobe in the corner. And painted it the same color as the wall to make it blend in.

7 | Hang white and purple curtains

To add some more white to the walls, I hung curtains that are white on top with a lighter shade or purple on the bottom.

Since the floral pattern on the bed is quite large, I wanted to keep the drapes fairly simple. But still incorporate the purple and white colors.

And these color-block drapes do that perfectly.

My mother sewed these for me, but you can buy similar ones that aren’t too expensive.

8 | Put down a comfy area rug

Although I love hardwood floors, they aren’t the most comfy things to step onto when you first get out of bed in the morning.

So I always put down a large area rug under the bed that extends at least 2 feet out from the sides.

Originally, I used a white rug with large purple flowers that I already owned and just happened to be the perfect colors to go with the bedroom.

But when I bought my new headboard, I changed it out for another floral area rug that has more blue in it. Which co-ordinates with the bed.

9 | Create A seating area

Another bedroom must-have for me is somewhere to sit that isn’t the bed.

Even if you don’t sit there often, it creates an inviting atmosphere in the room.

And provides a place to put the extra cushions from the bed at night.

For my seating area, I painted an old settee black (to go with the trim) and placed it against the wall opposite the bed.

Then made it into a cozy nook by building narrow bookshelves on either side of the settee, with an enclosed TV hung on the wall above it.

The drawer units at the bottom of the shelves are actually my old bedside tables (which got a makeover of their own to fit with the new decor).

And the really tall shelves help to balance out the high vaulted ceiling.

If your bedroom isn’t very big, a settee or bench is often the best way to add seating since they aren’t very wide.

10 | Put up A Stunning Light Fixture

I think upgrading light fixtures is one of the easiest ways to make a builder grade room look custom.

So it’s a detail I never leave out when I’m doing a room makeover.

For this room, I went with a sputnik chandelier (similar to this one). It adds crystal and sparkle, without being too fussy.

11 | Use A Gold Ceiling Medallion

Another problem with builder grade houses is their lack of any kind of architecture. So moldings of all kinds are my friend!

Which is part of the reason why I decided to add a ceiling medallion around the base of the light fixture for some extra emphasis.

It came in white which I thought would be too much contrast.

So I painted it this metallic champagne color*. And I love the way it looks against the purple ceiling.

12 | Install A Faux Fireplace

One of the things I found when I was planning my bedroom makeover is that almost all of the inspiration pictures I chose had mantels in them.

It had not occurred to me that I might want a fireplace mantel in my bedroom. But apparently I did.

The mantel I bought was unfinished wood that ships in 3 pieces. My mother painted the legs white and the top black before I installed it (which was actually really easy to do).

Then I used a small brush to highlight the design on the front with the same gold paint that I used on the ceiling medallion.

And installed a small panel molding (also painted gold) above it that acts as a frame for everything on top of the mantel.

A bunch of tall candle holders take the place of a fire.

It’s not an operational fireplace, but I love having a mantel to decorate.

13 | Use pops of other colors

The last of my purple bedroom decorating ideas is to mix some other colors, also in dark tones.

A lot of people think purple doesn’t go with many other colors. But nothing could be further from the truth!

The trick is to use colors with the same intensity.

Because this room is dark purple, it looks good with other rich colors.

I love how the blue inside the shelves and the green on the settee add extra pops of color.

It ties into the colors on the duvet, and they are both part of my whole house color scheme, so they provide continuity with the rest of the rooms in the house.

The artwork I hung between the windows brings the purple further up that wall, as well as repeating the blues and greens I used in the room.

14 | Add gold Accents

To finish the room off and add warmth, I used lots of gold accents.

Besides the ceiling medallion, the mirror frames, and the fireplace details, I also hung large gold flowers on the wall above the bed.

As well as a gold vase and other decorations on the bookshelves.

Sprinkling the metal around the room adds richness and warmth to the space. And leads your eye from one spot to the next, so it all looks cohesive.

15 | Make A Special Entrance

One of my favorite things in my new bedroom is a really small detail (and it isn’t really specific to having dark purple bedroom walls).

But sometimes it’s the small things that make the difference!

I switched out the original builder-grade brass door knobs for glass ones.

And it’s amazing how such a small detail can really elevate the look and feel of a room.

Don’t be surprised if all of the door knobs in my house end up getting this mini makeover.
