Let’s set the scene. It’s 60 degrees outside, the fireplace is on, you have on your favorite knit sweater, and there’s smooth jazz playing in the background. Enjoying your favorite hot beverage and a card game with the family – and your whole house smells delicious!
With notes of vanilla, citrus, and spice – it’s mouthwatering!
I have been making this easy and toxin-free stovetop pot-pourri for years. With basically no effort to come together this home fragrance lasts all day.
I share a little about my journey with artificial fragrances in this DIY all-purpose cleaner post. In summary, we don’t get along. I limit all artificial fragrances in my home, including candles. So this easy and toxin-free stovetop fragrance option is perfect for our family.
I’ll bet you already have everything you need to make this easy stovetop recipe in your pantry!
A bit of honesty here, I don’t typically measure this out. I usually use what I have on hand or what sounds good, and throw it into the pot.
The real beauty of this method is that it’s completely customizable to you and your fragrance preferences.
Toxin-free stovetop add-ins for cozy Autumn scents:
- Vanilla – this is the star of the show and gives the whole house that deliciousness smell
- Oranges or Lemons – use what you have on hand, this adds crisp citrus elements
- Whole spices – cloves, cinnamon sticks, coriander seeds, star anise. These mulling spices would be perfect!
- Tea bag – this is a little bit of a hack but adds great fragrance, use a spiced tea like Sweet & Spicy by Good Earth (my fave to drink too) or orange/vanilla spice
- Fresh herbs – rosemary, sage, thyme, pine
- Essential oils

Also one of the cheapest! Toxin-free candles can be upwards of $20 each and only have a few hours of burn time.
With this method, you control the ingredients which means you control the cost. You also have control over the length of time by adjusting the heat on the stove.
Things to remember
Remember that the water does evaporate over time so don’t ignore it and simply add more water as needed.
I have re-used the same fragrance pot two days in a row, simply add water and more fruit or seasoning the next morning for a refresh.
Don’t forget about your stove being on in general. With this method, leave it on low all day, and be sure to turn it off when going outside or leaving your home!
