ToggleMistake #1: Not using eye primer
Why is using eye primer so important? It preps the eyelids for the makeup and makes sure it stays on the whole time. Oily eye makeup? That can be avoided with eye primer. You’ll also avoid smudged eye makeup.

Mistake #2: Eyeliner too heavy
Heavy or thick eyeliner works well for younger people but not so much for mature women. It gives off a harsher look that just doesn’t suit mature women.
Keep eyeliner makeup thin. You literally just want to line the lids in one motion. But what about the wing at the end? Maybe you love those. You can still add a wing at the end but keep it small.
Have you ever experienced your mascara running down your face? It doesn’t matter how old you are, that look doesn’t work for anyone! How can you prevent that situation? Use waterproof mascara.
Just remember, waterproof mascara is a little harder to remove so make sure you have mascara or eye makeup remover to help you.
Do you have dark lines under your eyes and you want to hide them? Use a concealer that matches your skin tone. Here’s a simple trick to make it look natural. Using a small pointed brush, dab it on the lines and blend. Then use a powder that removes shine and just dab it under the eyes. Use a big brush to blend seamlessly.
Otherwise, if you just add more and more concealer, it’s going to look shiny and unnatural.
Are you one of those women who has wrinkles above the lip? There’s a solution to that! Use a transparent lipliner to line your lips so the lipstick doesn’t bleed out and make your wrinkles even more noticeable.
The liner keeps the lipstick in place.
Mistake #6: Too dark lipstick
To achieve a more youthful look, it’s always best to stick to lighter-colored lipstick. It gives off a friendlier vibe, don’t you think so?
Wearing dark-colored lipstick gives off Miranda Priestly vibes that can turn away most people.
Avoid flat foundation that gives you a cakey look. Avoid powder foundation as well that just matches your skin tone.
You need a foundation that complements your skin tone so the wrinkles stay hidden and covered.
There’s more to just using a foundation that complements your skin tone. Use highlighter as well to add that natural glow. Use a brush to dab on your cheekbones and your forehead.
And, this is the finishing touch, use a small brush and dab a little between the eyes to get that sparkle.
Mistake #9: Adding eyeliner to waterline
This is one technique that will add years to your face plus it makes you look like you’re too hard to look younger. It’s just so harsh and it highlights the fine lines around your eyes.
Those lines that you find on the eyelids, under the eyes, and on the corners of your eyes. Stick to the upper eyelid and keep it thin!
Mistake #10: Overdoing contouring
Last time we checked it’s already 2022 and almost 2023. It’s no longer the 1980s and there is no need to over-contour anymore. Nowadays, the minimalist, natural look is what works for most women.
You don’t want your makeup to overpower and control you. You want to use makeup to highlight your features. Stop with the overdone contouring already!
Mistake #11: Using blue eyeshadow
Did you use blue eyeshadow growing up in the 1970s? And you always applied eye shadow all over your eyes. This may have worked in your 20s.
But in your 50s or older? It just makes it look tacky and older.
Mistake #12: Overdoing eyebrows
Once you hit 50, a woman’s body changes. That includes changes in the skin, the hair, and the face. You don’t need to have thicker eyebrows anymore.
And use a color that’s closest to your hair color. You only need really fill in your eyebrows, not create a whole new one.
Mistake #13: Overlining lips
Overlining the lips is another mistake women over 50 make. Are you sending a pattern here? Overdoing your makeup will add years to your face. It was said that lining your lips with a dark color will make your lips look plumper. But to be honest, it just makes it look like there’s something wrong with your lips.
And using dark colors, stop. Then when you eat or drink something, the cup or glass or utensil essentially removes the lipstick. When you’re done, you’re basically left with dark lips. Stop using too much dark lip liners.
Mistake #14: False eyelashes
If you’re going to a glam event and you’re using some strong glue, then maybe you can wear false eyelashes.
If you really want to highlight your lashes, invest in a great mascara and swipe on a thick coat. As thick as your lashes can take it.
When you get older, it’s hard to stay out longer under the sun because it can damage the skin. But you don’t want to look pale and white. You still want that tanned look. Thank goodness for bronzers! But then, women tend to get too excited and add too much bronzer. Instead of looking tanned, you’re going to look orangey.
