What is Lassi?
Lassi is a yogurt-based drink that originates from India. It has a smoothie consistency and is often garnished with fresh fruit. You can make sweet or savory lassi mango smoothie using honey, sugar or salt to season it. Traditional lassi also calls for spices like cardamom powder, black pepper, or ginger.
Why You’ll Love This Mango Lassi
- Great for a hot day. This refreshing drink is perfect to keep you cool on a hot summer day.
- Ready in 5 minutes. It only takes 5 minutes to make this recipe. No extra freezing is required!
- Healthy dessert. This is a healthy alternative to ice cream with delicious fruit and yogurt.
What You’ll Need
There are only a few ingredients needed to make this mango lassi drink recipe. The only ingredient I don’t use as often is cardamom, but it’s not expensive!
- Frozen mango chunks: You can find this in the freezer section of the grocery store, usually with frozen vegetables. If you like to freeze mangos, you can use them instead.
- Fresh mango: The fresh mango adds extra mango flavor and makes a great garnish.
- Yogurt: I use whole milk yogurt for this recipe. You can use vanilla but I prefer plain yogurt to control the sweetness.
- Milk: A couple of splashes of milk helps to thin out the mango lassi so it’s drinkable.
- Sugar: Add sugar to taste based on your preferred level of sweetness.
- Cardamom: Ground cardamoms is a traditional Indian spice that has a citrus and spicy flavor with a hint of mint.
How to Make a Simple Mango Lassi
All you have to do to make this mango lassi recipe is slice the mangos and blend the ingredients. It’s so simple to make any time.
- Slice the mangos. The center of the mango is a large pit, so slice it vertically just off-center on each side. Take each side and make slices going in a crisscross pattern to make cubes. Carefully pop the flesh of the mango out of the skin, using a knife as needed.
- Blend. Place the fresh mango cubes into the blender and blend into a mango puree until smooth.
- Add remaining ingredients. Then, add all of the remaining ingredients except for the sugar and blend until smooth.
- Taste for sweetness. Add some sugar and taste until you achieve your desired sweetness.
- Serve. Enjoy in a glass with more fresh mangos on top!
Tips for Success
- Choose ripe mangos. Use mangos that are not hard but not mushy. They will be a little bit soft when perfectly ripe.
- Make popsicles. Pour the mango lassi into a popsicle mold and freeze it to make a tasty frozen treat.
- Try healthier additions. Replace the sugar with honey or maple syrup. Replace the full fat yogurt with low-fat yogurt.
- Try Greek yogurt. Use Greek yogurt instead of plain for a stronger tangy flavor. It’s a little bit thicker, so you may need an extra splash of milk to achieve the correct consistency.
Storage Directions
This mango lassi drink is best made to serve. It will become too thin when stored in the refrigerator and frozen in the freezer. It can be made just a few minutes ahead and stored in the freezer but I don’t recommend longer than 30 minutes.
