In case you’re in a hurry…

Materials Needed:

  • A ceramic or stainless steel dog water bowl
  • A small, shallow planter or a decorative pot that fits snugly around the dog bowl
  • Potting soil
  • A few small, non-toxic plants (e.g., spider plants, Boston ferns, or herbs like basil and rosemary)
  • Decorative stones or pebbles
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Planter: Start by choosing a shallow planter or a decorative pot that fits around your dog’s water bowl. Ensure that it is large enough to allow for proper drainage and aeration. If needed, add a layer of decorative stones or pebbles at the bottom of the planter to improve drainage.
  2. Add Potting Soil and Plants: Fill the planter with potting soil, leaving enough space to accommodate the plants. Choose non-toxic plants that are safe for pets, such as spider plants, Boston ferns, or herbs like basil and rosemary. Arrange the plants around the edges of the planter, leaving the center free for the dog water bowl. Gently press the soil around the plants to secure them in place.
  3. Place the Dog Water Bowl: Carefully place the dog water bowl in the center of the planter. Make sure it sits securely and is level with the surrounding soil. Fill the bowl with fresh water for your dog. The plants will not only enhance the appearance of the water station but also help keep the water cool and fresh by providing shade.
  4. Decorate and Maintain: Add decorative stones or pebbles around the plants to give the planter a polished look. Water the plants regularly, but be cautious not to overwater them, as this could lead to root rot. Also, keep an eye on the water level in the dog bowl and refill it as needed.

I was tired of our new puppy leaving puddles of water all over our floor after drinking from his water bowl so I decided to try the viral dog bowl in a plant hack.

I filled a $12 plastic self-watering pot from Home Depot with paper bags, then filled it with garden soil and planted some spider plants from our garden around the sides.

I placed the water bowl in the center and not only does it look cute but it’s functional for the plants and our dogs love it. Tag a friend that needs to see this!
